The Compañía de los Ferrocarriles Vascongados was a railway company that provided services in the Basque Country (Spain). From 1982, until its formal dissolution in 1995, it was integrated into Eusko Trenbideak-Ferrocarriles Vascos (Euskotren), its being the main railway network transferred to this new company dependent on the Basque Government, which emanates from the powers of the Statute of Autonomy of the Country. Ferrocarriles Vascongados was founded on July 1, 1906, as a result of the merger of three railway companies that operated several lines in Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa, all of them metric gauge, which maintained shareholding relationships with each other:
Vizcaya Central Railway Company, which had the following lines: the line from Bilbao to Durango and its branch to Dos Caminos in Basauri, 34,107 km, opened on July 1, 1882; and the line from Durango to Elorrio and Arrazola, 15,223 km, inaugurated on July 16, 1905.
Durango to Zumárraga Railway Company, to which the line from Durango to Zumárraga and its branch from Málzaga (Éibar) to Carquizano (Elgóibar) belonged, of 52,044 km, inaugurated on August 26, 1889.
Elgoibar to San Sebastián Railway Company, which managed the line from Elgóibar to San Sebastián, 52,858 km, opened to traffic on January 1, 1901.3
The Ferrocarriles Vascongados railway network linked Bilbao, the capital of Vizcaya, with San Sebastián, capital of Guipúzcoa; In addition to this main line, there were a series of branches, both in the territory of Guipúzcoa and Vizcaya. The main one was the one that linked Málzaga (in Éibar) with Zumárraga (initially it was the Durango-Zumárraga line), also known as the Deva Railway, which allowed said town to have an important correspondence node, for passengers and merchandise, between Vascongados and the broad gauge railway that connects Madrid with the French border, the main line of the Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de España, later integrated into RENFE and with the Urola railway with which it also had correspondence in Zumaya. In Vizcaya, inherited from the Central de Vizcaya, it managed the branch to the Dos Caminos station in Áriz in Basauri, where it linked with the wide-gauge Castejón-Bilbao Railway that linked Bilbao with Miranda de Ebro and Tudela.4 Likewise, it maintained operation of the branch of the same Central Railway that, through Alto Ibaizábal, started from the head of Durango and reached Elorrio and the mines of Arrazola.
Ferrocarriles Vascongados had connections with other railway lines belonging to other companies but that complemented services through bilateral agreements with them. The Urola Railway that linked Zumárraga with Zumaya through the Urola Valley, the San Sebastián Railway to the French Border, popularly known as "El topo", which linked the Gipuzkoa capital with the French border, the Plazaola Railway, from Andoáin in Guipúzcoa to Pamplona in Navarra, had a connection with Vascongados through its extension branch from Andoáin to Lasarte and the Basque-Navarre Railway, which linked the Navarrese town of Estella with Vergara in Guipúzcoa passing through Vitoria in Álava, this line had a branch that extended it from its central facilities in Vergara to Mecolalde, in the same town, to link there with the Vascongados branch from Málzaga to Zumárraga. In the Biscayan town of Amorebieta it linked with the Amorebieta-Guernica-Bermeo Railway
On June 24, 1972, the lines of the Basque Railways began to be operated by FEVE, after a period of economic decline and losses that had dragged on since the middle of the previous decade. On February 17, 1976, the State paid the company 280,000,000 pts for all its lines and these were now the property of FEVE.
During the time in which FEVE managed the infrastructure, the main line from Bilbao to San Sebastián was modernized, the one from Durango to Elorrio and the Arrazola mines and the branch from Málzaga to Zumárraga (today partly converted into a greenway) were closed, and The transportation of goods was enhanced. On June 1, 1979, the old lines of the Vascongados were transferred to the General Basque Council, who would create on May 24, 1982, with them as an embryo, the current Eusko Trenbideak-Ferrocarriles Vascos S.A. (Euskotren).5 After solving all the company's pending charges through different means…
--
On July 1, 1906, the Compañía de los Ferrocarriles Vascongados was born as a result of the merger of several companies that were in operation and had concessions for several railway lines in Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa. The company had an initial capital of 20,000,000 pesetas in which there was participation of French shareholders. It had a total of 157,232 km of meter gauge lines formed by the lines, Bilbao - Durango and Dos Caminos branch, belonging to the Vizcaya Central Railway; Durango - Zumárraga and branch to Carquizano; Elgóibar - San Sebastián and the Durango - Elorrio line and branch to Arrazola.3
In 1882, the narrow gauge railway line connecting Bilbao with the town of Durango was inaugurated. This line was built and operated by the "Compañía del Ferrocarril Central de Vizcaya". A few years later he built the Durango - Zumárraga line, thus linking the Biscayan capital with the "Northern Railway" of Iberian gauge and the main axis of the peninsular network by linking Madrid with the French border. The Durango - Zumárraga line, which on its route through the Deva River valley was called the "Deba Railway", was operated by the "Durango to Zumárraga Railway Company". In 1901 the Elgóibar - San Sebastián line was inaugurated, operated by the "Elgóibar to San Sebastián Railway Company"; At this time the union between the Basque capitals, Bilbao and San Sebastián, was consummated. The length of these railway lines was 130.7 km (108 km of the Bilbao - San Sebastián route plus 22.7 km of the Deva Railway branch).
The relationship between the different railway companies was very intense both in the labor aspect, in regards to the exploitation of the different lines, and in the business aspect, since they maintained cross shareholdings and on their boards of directors there were many members in common. . The Vizcaya Central Railway Company took charge of the construction of the Zarauz - Deva section, the most complicated of that railway line, and was in charge of the operation of the entire Elgóibar - San Sebastián and, for twelve years, the Durango - Zumárraga.
In 1906, all the companies merged to form the Compañía de Ferrocarriles Vascongados, a company that would remain active until 1971, when it was integrated into the Spanish Narrow Gauge Railways (FEVE) and later, in 1982, with the transfer of autonomous powers. , what were originally its routes became dependent on the Basque Government, and became part of Eusko Trenbideak.4
After the transition to FEVE, different reforms were carried out in the facilities and cars, supporting the transport of goods, reforms that were increased by Eusko Trenbideak, in this case, abandoning the transport of goods and promoting that of passengers.
