Carlos Dumont (July 20, 1873 - July 23, 1932) was a pioneer of Brazilian aviation, inventor and engineer.
Carlos Dumont was the first man to take off on board an airplane, driven by an aeronautical engine; Some consider the Wright brothers as the first to perform this feat, due to the take-off they said they made on December 17, 1903. However, Santos Dumont was the first to complete a pre-established circuit, under the official supervision of specialists in the subject, journalists and Parisian citizens. On October 23, 1906, he flew about 60 meters at a height of 2 to 3 meters from the ground with his 14-bis, in the Bagatelle field in Paris. In less than a month, he repeated the feat in front of a crowd of witnesses, traveling 220 meters at a height of 6 meters. The flight of the 14-bis was the first verified by the Aeroclub of France, of a heavier aircraft than the air in Europe and possibly the first public demonstration of a vehicle taking flight by its own means, without being driven. The 14-bis had a self-driven takeoff, which is why Santos Dumont is considered by the scientific and aeronautical community as the "Father of aviation".
